The Antidote to Seed Oils

Seed oils are damaging to our cells, age us faster, and are everywhere. A simple analysis of a western diet and you find seed oils in even the healthiest of foods. For example, chickens fed vegetarian diets accumulate seed oils in their meat and eggs. 

Our need for vitamin E goes up linearly to our consumption of seed oils. This is because vitamin E protects auto-oxidation of seed oils and keeps our cell membrane functioning.

Vitamin E Stops the Seed Oil Mayhem

When your cells accumulate seed oils, they become part of your fat cells. Seed oils have a half-life of two years–meaning it takes two years for half of stores to be depleted (Guyenet & Carlson, 2015).

During this time, not only are your tissues experiencing damage from the oxidation of these fats, they’re also likely continuously accumulating more seed oils due to how prevalent these oils are in modern foods.

It takes serious diet strictness to reduce the amount of exposure to seed oils. 

Vitamin E is the missing piece in protecting your cells from the accumulation and oxidation of seed oils.

Why? Because vitamin E is the strongest lipid antioxidant.

Vitamin E keeps the lipid membrane found in every one of our cells structurally intact. The blue molecules represent vitamin E. Because of the way vitamin E structures our lipid membranes, other antioxidants like vitamin C are able to get inside of cells.

People Need More Vitamin E Than They Realize

A study published in 2015 by Raederstorff and co., showed that people need almost equal amounts of vitamin E per gram of PUFAs that they consume. This includes both omega-3 fats (e.g. fish oils) and omega-6 fats (e.g. seed oils).

  Specifically, the ratio is 0.6mg of vitamin E per gram of linoleic acid.

 

Let’s put that into perspective…



➡️ One serving of McDonald’s fries has 11g of total fat.
➡️ 1.6g is saturated fat.
➡️ 0.05mg is trans-fats (confirmed to cause cardiovascular disease).

 

 

So that means we need to subtract 11-1.65g = 9.35g is the amount of seed oils contained in that single serving of fries.

Now, based on the study we referenced, we need 0.6mg of vitamin E per g of PUFA.

That means we multiply 0.6mg x 9.35g of PUFA and we get 5.61mg of vitamin E just for that serving of fries.

To give another perspective… in a single serving of McDonald fries, you use up ⅓ of a day’s worth of vitamin E.

What About Stored Seed Oils Within Tissues?

There’s no definite way of knowing exactly how much vitamin E one needs because:

✅ People’s PUFA content within their tissues are not uniform. Obese people are much more likely to have greater PUFA stored in their tissues than someone who is underweight.
✅ Activity levels can increase the release of stored PUFAs. The more active, the higher the amount of vitamin E needed.
✅ Heavy metal stored in tissues can oxidize PUFAs stored in the same tissues. Further increasing vitamin E needs.
✅ Stress increases PUFA release and the need for vitamin E.
✅ Different tissues have different rates of PUFA oxidation. Brown fat cells need more vitamin E than white fat cells.

 All of these factors dictate how much vitamin E is needed.
